Miami locals have started using quiet trails inside smaller city parks for morning runs and weekend hikes instead of the busier waterfront paths that fill with visitors each day.
The trend fits the city's established wellness routines, where residents look for shade and fewer interruptions during the hottest months of the year. City parks staff have kept these routes open with regular maintenance even as larger attractions draw most attention from out-of-town guests.
The Enchanted Forest Elaine Gordon Park sits along Northeast 135th Street and gives walkers a loop through pine flatwoods and a small lake without the lines seen at South Beach parks. Nearby residents from the North Miami area use the 1.2-mile path for quick sessions before work. A second spot, the Marjory Stoneman Douglas Biscayne Nature Center on Virginia Key, runs short boardwalks through mangroves that stay shaded and are reached by a short drive from downtown rather than the main beach entrances.
Both locations fall under Miami-Dade County Parks and Recreation, which posts updated trail maps on its public site each season. Local running groups have posted route notes for these two spots on community boards since at least 2024.
People new to the routes can start at the Enchanted Forest entrance off 135th Street, where free parking holds space on weekday mornings. The county site lists opening hours from 8 a.m. daily and notes that the Virginia Key boardwalk stays open without an entry fee. Walkers should bring water and check the county alerts page for any temporary closures after heavy rain. Those who want company can join the free monthly nature walk listed on the parks calendar, which meets at the Enchanted Forest gate on the second Saturday of each month.
